Adding Custom Email Preference Center Pages to Emails

Last Updated: Apr 26, 2016 | Print this Article

You can create custom email preference center pages to allow your subscribers to manage which email lists they are subscribed to. To use custom email preference center pages in your emails, you'll need update the %%email_preference_center%% tags. This process is different, depending on whether you're including both an %%unsubscribe%% and an %%email_preference_center%% tag, or just an %%email_preference_center%% tag on your templates. Before you begin, make sure you have created your custom email preference center pages.

Emails with %%unsubscribe%% and %%email_preference_center%% Tags

We must use a custom variable tag to add the custom email preference page to the email to pass CAN-SPAM validation (and we cannot use the %%email_preference_center%% tag as it links to the Default email preference page).
  1. While editing your email draft or email template, add text to link to your email preference page.
  2. Highlight the text and click the Link icon in the editor.
  3. In the Link menu, set the Link Type to Email Preference Page.
  4. Select your custom email preferences page from the dropdown.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Continue editing your email.

Emails with Only %%email_preference_center%%

  1. While editing your email draft or email template, click the update subscription preferences link.
  2. Right-click the link in the editor and click Edit Link.
  3. In the Link menu, set the Link Type to Email Preference Page.
  4. Select your custom email preferences page from the dropdown.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Continue editing your email.

Text-Only Emails

If you want to include a custom email preferences center link on a text-only email (by setting the Email Type as Text when you create it), then you must add it to the email manually.
First, you'll need the id of your custom email preference center. You can find this by following these steps:
  1. Navigate to Marketing > Emails > Preferences Page.
  2. Find the custom preference page you want to include, and look at the last digits of the URL. This is your email preference page id. Make note of the id.
Finding email preference center id

Once you've got the email preference page id, add it to the %%email_preference_center%% variable tag in your text-only email, separated with an underscore. For example, if your email preference page page id is 406, your variable tag should look like this: %%email_preference_center_406%%
