Setting up the Salesforce Connector

Last Updated: Aug 17, 2016 | Print this Article

Here, we'll cover getting your Salesforce account prepped to start receiving updates from Pardot, setting up the connector settings (username, password, and optional settings) in Pardot, and verifying the connector for the first time.

Important: Before you can follow the steps in this article, you must have already installed the Pardot AppExchange package. We recommend that you start at the beginning of the Salesforce Connector Series.

Adding the Salesforce connector to Pardot

  1. In Pardot, navigate to Admin > Connectors.
  2. Click + Add Connector.
  3. Click salesforce.com.
  4. Optional: If you're connecting to a Salesforce sandbox, mark the box.
  5. Click Create Connector.
  6. In the pop-up box, enter the connector user's Salesforce credentials and click Log in to Salesforce. Note: a Salesforce username can only be used in one Pardot account at a time.
  7. Once you've logged in, click Allow to give the connector permission to access your account. At a minimum, the connector user needs the Pardot Connector User permission set and the object and field permissions outlined in What permissions does the Salesforce connector user need? These permissions are not optional.
  8. Choose your connector settings.
  9. Click Finish to save your connector.

Optional connector settings

Choose your Salesforce connector settings. For a full list and description of each setting, see Salesforce Connector Settings Reference.

Verifying your connector

Your Salesforce connector will now appear in the connectors table. It will show as In Progress while it verifies the connection. If Pardot is able to successfully send and receive data to and from Salesforce, the status will change to Verified.

If Pardot is able to successfully send and receive data to and from Salesforce, the status will change to Verified. Although you don't have to, it's a good idea to test your connector before moving on.

Initial prospect sync

When the connector is first verified, the prospects that are already within Pardot are added to the sync queue to be synced with Salesforce. However, the lead and contact records that already exist in Salesforce do not automatically sync down to Pardot.

Note: Prospects are only queued to sync on the first CRM connector verified. If you switch to Salesforce from another CRM, prospects will not be queued to sync.

If your CRM has leads and contacts that do not exist in Pardot at the time the CRM connector is verified, they will not sync down to Pardot automatically. To sync those leads and contacts between Pardot and Salesforce, we recommend that you do an initial import of those records into Pardot once the connector has been verified.
